Sydney Martin

Martin-blackwhiteSydney is a college freshman studying how to maximize the benefit she provides to the world. She has always placed an emphasis on education, but did not realize her passion for altruistic efforts until her sophomore year of high school. She joined the Interact Club, a Rotary sponsored group that worked to better the lives of people in the community. By the end of high school, she decided to spend her life helping others in whatever capacity she can. However, she felt very lost in how to accomplish this. She was overwhelmed by the problems in the world and did not know how to apply her desire to improve the state of the world.

In college, she took several sustainability courses and suddenly knew she had found her calling. Sustainability understands how multifaceted the world is and attempts to approach challenges with a solution that is just as complex. This major is providing her with a framework on how to create solutions to global issues.

She found the Challenge 2050 program by chance. Dr. Andenoro spoke to one of her classes about the program, and instantly she knew she had to be part of it. It has provided her with a more complex understanding of the world and her role in it. This program has given her the confidence to believe she can positively impact the world. Sydney is in Cohort 1 of the Challenge 2050 Project Scholars and plans on being as involved with the program as possible to help develop it further.
