Challenge 2050 Scholars

Become a Challenge 2050 Scholar

The Challenge 2050 Scholars program brings together motivated University of Florida students who are ready to tackle the defining global issues of our time. Scholars engage deeply with challenges such as feeding a growing population, rising seas, urban sprawl, rural flight, and clean energy — developing the adaptive leadership and social responsibility needed to drive real change.

Through a combination of innovative coursework, hands-on projects, and mentorship from faculty and industry partners, scholars build practical skills while contributing to solutions that matter. The program is housed within the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, Department of Agricultural Education & Communications.

The Challenge 2050 Scholars program is designed for undergraduate students who want to move beyond traditional classroom learning and engage with real-world global issues. Scholars explore complex topics like feeding a growing population, rising seas, urban sprawl, rural flight, and clean energy through innovative coursework and hands-on projects. This unique experience cultivates adaptive leadership and social responsibility, preparing students to become creative, inspired change-makers. By connecting with faculty experts and industry partners, scholars gain the capacity to make informed decisions and develop practical solutions to the pressing challenges facing our planet and its communities.

Becoming a Challenge 2050 Scholar means joining a community of motivated peers who share a commitment to addressing humanity's most critical issues. The program emphasizes collaborative problem-solving and interdisciplinary learning, allowing students to see connections between agriculture, technology, policy, health, and the environment. Scholars work together on real projects that have tangible impact, building skills that translate directly into meaningful careers. This supportive network of fellows, alumni, and professionals provides ongoing mentorship and opportunities for growth, helping each scholar develop the confidence and expertise needed to lead with purpose in a rapidly changing world.

The impact of the Challenge 2050 Scholars program extends far beyond graduation. Scholars emerge as informed, connected leaders equipped to drive positive change in their communities and across the globe. The program's focus on adaptive leadership ensures that graduates can navigate uncertainty and complexity with resilience and creativity. Whether pursuing careers in industry, policy, research, or social enterprise, former scholars carry forward the skills and perspectives gained through their experiences. They become part of a growing network of change-makers committed to building a sustainable, equitable future for generations to come.

What Scholars Do

Interdisciplinary Coursework

Scholars progress through a sequence of courses — from ALS 2410 (Global Uncertainty) through ALS 4950 (Taking Action) — that build critical thinking and problem-solving capacity.

Global Engagement

Opportunities to participate in international projects and study-abroad experiences connect scholars with communities and peers around the world.

Real-World Application

Internships with corporate partners such as Limagrain and HM.Clause allow scholars to apply their learning in professional settings and gain valuable experience.

Leadership Development

Scholars cultivate adaptive leadership skills — learning to navigate complexity, collaborate across disciplines, and inspire others toward sustainable solutions.

Selection & Participation

The Challenge 2050 Scholars program seeks students who demonstrate curiosity, commitment, and a genuine desire to contribute to global problem-solving. Scholars are selected based on their academic engagement and their interest in the program's core challenge areas.

Once admitted, scholars join a cohort that moves through the certificate course sequence together, participates in special events, and gains access to exclusive internship and networking opportunities. Past events have included presentations at TEDxUF and the ONE WORLD 2018 gathering.
