Our Philosophy
The Challenge 2050 Project, housed within the University of Florida's College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, reimagines education for a rapidly changing world. We believe that aware, connected, and creative human beings make innovative and inspired decisions. Our program cultivates the capacity for adaptive leadership and social responsibility in the next generation of global change-makers.
Through innovative coursework and hands-on experiences, students confront the defining challenges of our time: feeding a growing population, rising seas, urban sprawl, rural flight, and the transition to clean energy. Rather than passive learning, we emphasize critical thinking, collaboration, and real-world problem solving.
How the Program Works
The Challenge 2050 curriculum is built around a progressive sequence of courses that guide students from understanding global uncertainty to designing and implementing tangible solutions. Each course builds on the last, forming a coherent arc of intellectual and practical development.
- ALS 2410 – Global Uncertainty: An introduction to the interconnected challenges shaping the 21st century.
- ALS 3415 – Developing Tools for Changing the World: Building the skills and frameworks needed to analyze complex problems.
- ALS 3940 – The Experience: Immersive, field-based learning that brings classroom concepts to life.
- ALS 4419 – Creating Solutions: Designing actionable strategies for real-world challenges.
- ALS 4950 – Taking Action: A capstone experience where students implement their solutions.

Innovative Methods
Challenge 2050 moves beyond traditional lectures. Our approach integrates experiential learning, international travel, and direct engagement with corporate and community partners. Students have presented at events such as TEDxUF and participated in global gatherings like ONE WORLD 2018, gaining real-world visibility and professional experience.
By connecting classroom theory with practice, we prepare students not just to understand global challenges, but to lead the response.
